Surely, we’ve each heard this bit of wisdom hundreds of times, in some form: it’s better to teach a hungry person how to fish than to give a fish.
This comes to mind every time an article is published about a wealthy person who pledges to give a large percentage, maybe even most, of their material wealth away (before or after they die).
They suppose they’re making the world a better place by giving to organizations engaged in providing services for the needy. In “fishing” terms, these organizations specialize in giving fish, day after day, so that those we see as less fortunate can keep eating, can keep surviving.
Is this form of promoting dependency really, in any way, the true American Dream?
A tricky question, that is, because each individual has his/her own definition of “the American Dream”. But if you truly embrace the American view of our unalienable rights to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”, you can’t be satisfied with merely helping others to survive.
The American objective, we assert, is to teach others how to thrive in the best economic environment in the world… and, right now is the best time in our history to “fish” for dollars.
Knowledge is potential power. Gaining an understanding of how to use today’s tools to generate passive income is even greater potential power. With the exception of gambling, knowledge and understanding of how to make dollars work for you is how anyone can make their American Dream come true.
